Patti's Personal Opinion:
Waitress Salary

(Good, Bad and Ugly)

waitress salary

If you are wondering what a typical waitress salary is you might be shocked.

The "salary" or hourly wage for waitresses is pitiful. That is both the good news and the bad. Hourly salaries are as low as $2.13 in some areas to a high of $7.00 (the highest I’ve personally heard of). Obviously, these hourly wages are barely enough to live on. And if you are working for your hourly wage only you will be living very low on the economic lifestyle totem pole.

Now, the good news!
A waitress with a "salary" as low as $2.00 per hour can still make A LOT of money!

If you get good at your craft, get hired at a busy establishment that lets you use your capacity, you can make more money in tips than the average 40 hour factory worker. And you can have a lot of fun doing it!

Once I realized the skills it took to increase my tips I didn’t even consider my hourly wage. I would gladly work in a place offering a lower hourly wage with many customers than in a place that wanted to pay me more per hour, but with fewer customers.

I eventually started banking and investing my salary and lived very well on my tips alone.

Don’t get started thinking you will make minimum wage. In most areas, food service people make LESS than normal minimum wage (because of your tips).

Focus on learning how to make more tips, serve your customers better, and perfecting your waitressing skills. Your tips will soon dwarf your paycheck (minus deductions of course), and you won’t be concerned with your waitress salary.

One of the most important things to remember is to never run out of anything.
Get fully setup before you start a shift. Nothing is worse than having a table of eight sit just when you realize you’re out of supplies. You'll spend most of your shift just trying to get caught up.

Rumps don't go on tables. It's a rule at the Family Buggy restaurant in Farmington Hills — and a pretty good guideline for anywhere else — so when a manager leaned against a prep table the other day, that's what a waitress told him.
