Patti's Personal Opinion:
Waitress Etiquette

(Look at that guys suit)

waitress etiquette

When my readers ask me about waitress etiquette they are usually asking about "serve from the left" type of things. There is another type of waitress etiquette I'd like to address.

Unfortunately, especially in slower establishments, I have seen far too many good waitresses turn into gossip parties and bull rings.

Being a waitress does not mean getting the scoops on your customers, staff and management and then gossiping about them.

It is common to get dragged down into the mud and spend your shift laughing and gossiping about different customers. In a few places I worked it seemed like it was the major reason for some waitresses showing up for their shift.

You will overhear many personal conversations. You'll have things said to you as your customer is looking for comfort. You might hear things about your table by other staff. Stay away from it. Don't get sucked down into the pit.

Eventually gossiping and putting down customers will back fire on you and you will find yourself in a very uncomfortable situation. Become a professional. When you are constantly looking for condescending comments about customers to share with the bull ring your tips will suffer. Customers can tell you are not focused on them.

However, if you rise above the base. Refuse to get drawn in to gossip and putting down staff and customers. You will get a loyal of customers and be richly rewarded in tips.

Refusing to gossip about staff or customers during your shift is an important part of waitress etiquette.

You need to know how much I have enjoyed your e-book and all your daily tips. I hesitate to share too much at work because I want to encourage people to go to your website and buy the book for themselves. I have a part time waitressing job which I love and have always made good tips because my people know I enjoy being there and waiting on them. Thanks to a few of your ideas I've seen my take home explode!
Thanks so much!
