Patti's Personal Opinion:

Waiting On Tables

(Please be seated and we'll begin)

waiting on tables

Waiting on tables requires real talent. A great server is like a great artist!

The general public thinks waiting on tables is a simple "job", and maybe they're right. However, waiting on tables REALLY well and getting paid REALLY well is not all that simple (and not everyone can do it!). Most people earning a living as a waitress or waiter are struggling financially!

It takes a lot of organizational and people skills to master this job. Waiting on tables well (and getting compensated for it), usually takes years of trial and error. Most waiters/waitresses simply don’t have the proper training.

Staying ahead of the game is one way to reduce your stress and the first step on the road to making great tips. For example, think ahead and make sure you have all your supplies handy and ready to go so you’ll be assured when you get really busy. It’s hard to remain calm, confident, and happy and in control when your section is full and another table has just been seated, and you can’t find any menus or cutlery.

Waiting tables for big money becomes simpler when you start making it a routine to evaluate what you did every shift, and consider ways to improve your efficiency and performance. Don’t just punch a clock. Learn the trade, challenge yourself to become the best server in your establishment.

Two black tables were surrounded by people talking, laughing and waiting for lunch to be ready. On the tables were a number of black, cast iron Dutch ovens, with glowing red coals dusted in white ash locking heat in from the top while also roasting the pot from the bottom.
