Patti's Personal Opinion:
Waiters

(And I don’t mean the dumb kind)

waiters

Waiters, waiters everywhere!
Way back, when I first started out, there were very few waiters in the restaurant business in my area, (except for the very high end fine dining establishments.) Men usually worked in the management, kitchen or behind the bar. The majority of wait staff was female. They were usually girls just out of high school, women trying to put themselves through college, or single moms. Slowly males started becoming more visible and no are readily accepted as servers.

I have heard many waiters complain that they are on an unfair playing field. Many whine that they can’t make as much money as a waitress because they lack the "female attributes" that earn some waitresses big money!

They are wrong!

I have had the pleasure to work with some waiters who challenged me for top tip earner on a shift. They had observed what works and what doesn’t and become efficient, polished and educated in what a man needs to do to be successful in the hospitality industry. It’s a simple as educating themselves and testing different people skills.

Recently, my husband and I were served in a pancake house by a male waiter. This server was AMAZING! I felt proud to watch this gentleman serve his tables.

He had it DOWN!!

I saw the tables he served go from indifferent to expectant as he would serve them. Don’t get me wrong, he wasn’t breathing fire, pulling placemats from underneath the food or doing magic tricks. He was simply evaluating each table quickly, and then waited on each table in a matter that was PERFECT for them, based on his evaluation.

When things calmed down in his section we struck up a conversation with this waiter. Turns out this waiter was making a UNBELIEVABLE income working morning shifts in a pancake house.

This guy had SKILLS!

It was sad that this man was not the favorite of some of the other waitresses working there. Instead of observing his methods and duplicating them I wondered if they were thinking, "We can’t make that kind of tip money because we aren’t male!"? (wink)

If you want to be a waiter you must learn to be efficient and organized. There are the basic functions of any operation that must be learned. But if you want to be a WEALTHY waiter please don’t stop with the basics. Work, test and refine your personal and customer service skills to become a TERRIFIC waiter!

Try to avoid handling money and change in front of your customers.
Some customers are repulsed by their server handling dirty money and serving them too. Use tip trays or folio booklets to deliver change to your customers.

    Waiters in the news;

Syracuse Basketball: Is Orange Guard Dion Waiters Really an Elite Player?
During the Syracuse Orange's domination of the early stretch of the season, Dion Waiters emerged as a key contributor for the team and caught the attention of fans and media nationwide. The sophomore's active perimeter defense and playmaking abilities help give Jim Boeheim one of the most fearsome backcourts in the country. By mid-December, Waiters was hailed as the best bench player in the ...

Waiters, No. 1 Syracuse (19-0) thump Providence
Dion Waiters had 12 points, seven coming during a decisive first-half run, Scoop Jardine added 10 points and nine assists, and top-ranked Syracuse beat undermanned Providence 78-55 on Saturday night to remain unbeaten.

Syracuse Basketball: Can Kris Joseph and Dion Waiters Excel in the NBA?
In what is quite possibly the deepest NBA draft in the last decade, Kris Joseph and Dion Waiters could become late first-round or early second-round draft steals. Joseph has gone from the best all-around player on this Orange squad to not even the best forward for Syracuse, as James Southerland and C.J. Fair have better shooting percentages and have led many scoring runs. With that being said ...
