Patti's Personal Opinion:
Proper Tipping

(This isn’t physics)

proper tipping

What is proper tipping?
In most regions it is considered that 10-20% is an "appropriate" tip. However, this varies greatly by area and country.

I have heard that British Airways now plays a short movie on their flights to the US that instruct the travelers as to what is proper tipping in America. It seems that the British don’t tip as much at home, or they tip much less than American servers are used to.

I have also been told lately that Canadians visiting the US don’t tip well.

When asked about the proper tipping amounts, the general public seemed to think that 10% was fair, while some felt that they shouldn't tip at all. Many felt that the owners of the establishment should pay the servers better wages and not make it an obligation of the customer. When I ask people what they think a server makes as an hourly wage it is obvious that are not very well informed.

My suggestion is that all customers should base their gratuity on the level of service. This gives the server a chance to make much MORE than a living wage. YOU make that the standard for what you earn and what is proper tipping.

Testimonial

My husband thought I was nuts for spending 20$ on an e-book, and quite frankly, I thought that too.
Anyways, I've been waiting tables for about 3 months now. Friday night I was searching the internet, trying to find something to tell me how to be a better server. Like you said, there was nothing out there. That's when I bought your e-book and got through about half of it Friday night. So tonight, I tried one thing from the book......
To my surprise, I felt more comfortable with my customer, and apparently my customers felt more comfortable with me. I made $10 off of one table and $12 off of 2 others. I figured I paid off the cost of the e-book in my first night.
Thanks for the tips on making tips!
