Patti's Personal Opinion:
Being A Great Waitress

(Focus, Focus, Focus)

being a great waitress

Being a great waitress is a real accomplishment. There is a huge difference between a good and a "GREAT" waitress.

I have seen and worked with many good waitresses over the years, but I've only run into a few great ones. There are many little techniques that veteran waitresses learn that improve their efficiency, get them larger gratuities, and elevate them to the top of the heap. However, there seems to be a large mental shift that a waitress must make before she can truly be a great waitress.

Once you learn all the tricks and get that confidence that comes with knowing what you are doing, you must then completely commit your focus to serving your customer.

When you are "learning" the trade you must constantly evaluate what you are doing, change what doesn't work, try new things, and improve on what works. You must observe the best waitresses you are working with and try and take from their strengths. This will elevate you to becoming a good waitress. This requires you to focus on yourself somewhat to critique your skills as you are learning.

Then once you have your mojo together, shift your perspective and completely focus on your customer. Don't worry about your tips, our how you are being perceived by your co-workers. Be confident that have learned the skills and techniques that make you good, now trust in those skills and put them on auto-pilot. Develop a spy sense for your customers needs. Evaluate each table and each customer and become extremely aware of their needs. Try to anticipate their every want. Don't over serve, don't under serve. React based on your skills and knowledge. Once you really start to focus on human behaviour and your customers you will develop a sixth sense as to what each customer wants from their dining experience.

Learn all you can. Become a refined and confident waitress. Learn all the little methods to making larger tips. And then concentrate 150% on serving your customers.

You will develop a cadence to your shift and your income will explode. The total focus to your customer is the difference between being a waitress and being a great waitress!

One more thing. I have never met a great waitress who wasn't great to be around. They seem to be extremely positive people. I'm not sure what came first, the very positive attitude about life, or the great money they make? One things for sure, you will need to elevate yourself from negative people and negative situations on your journey to becoming a great waitress!
