Patti's Personal Opinion:
Bartender

(Up the ladder)

bartender

I became a bartender in a less conventional way.

I had been a waitress for years, and decided it was time to try my hand at being a bartender. I never wanted to stop learning or trying things.

I had watched bartenders make my drinks and customer’s drinks for a long time. I didn’t register for a course on bartending. I simply observed what the bartenders did and always jumped in to help whenever the bartender got swamped and needed an extra hand. Whenever the slow times occurred I’d ask questions of the best bartenders.

I learned by actually doing and just was lucky enough to have a great memory. It is always smart to watch what the best staff does; it is sometimes the best training.

I’m not saying you shouldn’t register for a course, I’m simply saying that I learned how to bartend by working and watching (and making money), instead of going to a classroom setting.

Learn the ingredients of the drinks, work on your customer skills, and then go learn to bartend on the job!

One of the most important things to remember is to never run out of anything.
Get fully setup before you start a shift. Nothing is worse than having a table of eight sit just when you realize you’re out of supplies. You'll spend most of your shift just trying to get caught up.

Paint this picture in your mind: You’re at a bar, waiting your turn to grab the bartender’s attention, anticipating that Johnny Walker, a shot of chilled Patron or maybe just that frosty Budweiser when you overhear the guy in front of you place his order. “Um, how about a Cosmo?”
